Background
Marikaj (pronouced "ma-ree-kuh) is a village just a few miles from
Albania's airport. Distinguished by rows and rows of
greenhouses which run along the Autostrata to Tirana, this village also has a
small "commercial district" including a pub, hairdresser, and
convenience shop.
One will find a strong Muslim tradition which has made
the children's work here occasionally difficult. Parents are afraid that
by attending the Bright Star programs their children will "change
religions," an action disloyal to one's heritage in this culture.
Early in 2002, a majority of the children abruptly discontinued
their participation at the Tuesday Bright Star program. Team members were
discouraged and after much prayer determined that they would visit the parents
of these children. To their amazement, these visits were quite positive
and many of the children returned. Nevertheless, these kids are often
harassed by Muslim children in the village for taking part in an evangelical
event.
If you think of Planters and the Bright Star Team on any
Tuesday, pray for the village of Marikaj and all the potential represented by
these young ones.
Planter's
Meeting Place in Marikaj
Planters purchased property in the village of Marikaj in 2001.
During the summer of 2002, the facility (a first floor apartment) underwent
extensive renovation to outfit it for the Lord's use. Today, sparkling new
tile floors, brightly painted yellow walls, and secure new windows greet the
youngsters that meet here each week. The team also has a kitchen area in
which to stow materials and prepare snacks for the kids.
Eventually it's our dream to utilize this facility for other ministry functions
including adult education classes for others in this community. It is
important for everyone in this community to know that Planters cares for them.
