Albanians
have an intriguing proverb. “A
blind wife and a deaf husband are ideal for good matrimony.”
We
have attended two Albanian weddings over the past two weekends.
Both couples are personal friends and I can attest to all parties
having the correct physical attributes.
All eyes and ears seem to be in order.
I am always curious by culture.
I can usually gauge a person’s loyalty to a particular belief or
cause by their passion.
Strict adherence goes a long ways in customs and in marriage (there
are several types of ropes used in tying the knot).
But back to our proverb. A
blind wife can still frown and a deaf husband can still turn a cold
shoulder.
At this station in the lives of these two marriages a good start is
in order.
Time and fatigue will physically diminish us but what does time do
to us spiritually?
My belief for these couples is that the tandem of growth with God
and of growth with each other will in these two cases make this proverb a
fairy tale. |
