Greetings to you all,
This is just a quick note to show you a picture that was taken on our way
home from the village yesterday afternoon. The situation was sparked by a
big political protest at the Prime Minister's building that is about 4
blocks from our apartment. About 17,000 people came to show dissatisfaction
with the current prime minister, Fatos Nanos. The police closed off the main
roads into the city of Tirana. Since we had been out in the village at our
weekly Saturday morning children's meeting we got stuck in one of the road
blocks about five miles out of town. There were rumors about a shipment of
explosives that someone was bringing into the city and so the police were
searching all the vehicles coming into town. We don't know if this is going
to gain more intensity or if it will dissipate over time. Hopefully the
Prime Minister will make concessions and will listen to the people's
concerns. This does not appear serious enough, for the moment, to change any
daily activities for us. We will keep you posted. Sunday afternoon--David
