Tree Huggers
If a tree fell in the
forest, and there was no one there, would it make any sound? What if that
tree grew and fell in Bosnia? The only sound it would make in Albania is a
cash register closing and opening! Nine hundred miles to the southwest that
lumber now sits in our front yard for remodeling the director’s house.
Fatmir, our contractor,
says jokingly that my job is to sit on the lumber and wait for the Serbian
spies to climb out of the boards. To understand his joke is to understand
that these trees really grew in Bosnia. Bosnian Serbs were and still are
Albania’s enemy due to the fighting of the late nineties. I held my post
for my allotted time but I think my weight was what they really wanted in
straightening out the boards more than in my vigilance.
What a history there is to
a tree. While settling the account for the lumber I asked the dealer about
the region where the trees had grown. He said the trees came from the
grandsons of trees where royalty hunted, where vanished European elk and
bear roamed and more recently where Serb tanks hid to fire on ethnic
Albanians who passed by. What a story a tree can tell.
Another long ago message
came from the apostle Paul. He had a story, as well, to tell. He had been
called to teach information that had been made secret for centuries and
generations past. Paul was commissioned to make known the Word of God, the
revelation of His will. Col.1:26 Like the story of the trees, Paul’s
revealing the truth of God proves timing is everything.
