Mud Pies
With No Rain?
The country of Albania is going through a mini drought. This
drought in turn has a direct affect on village life and our village work.
In case anyone doubted the importance of rain to little boys I should remind
you of their activities. The road map to adventure for them prompts visions
of stomping water puddles, launching frogs over ponds or making mud pies!
Faced with this reality, rain makes mud and mud is the place to be. But for
Albanian little boys, an Albania without rain is Albania without mud.
What happens when the drought is not about rain but about
jobs or economics? When your family hasn’t had a job in years it’s a drought
as well. Families without jobs or work are stranded in the driest of
times. Living in the village is always laced with the absence of fancy
stuff. For these young boys pictured, there’s no password for Game Boys,
PlayStations, or air hockey. There’s no shortcut to happiness. When we
arrive in Kasalle every
Thursday afternoon, smiles and songs, skits and games come to town.
It is worth looking forward to some things. Maybe a drought
in our lives has made it impossible to make spiritual mud pies. Maybe the
dry season curtails our growth and happiness. We need to as the writer of
Hebrews said, “Flee to take hold of the hope offered to us and be greatly
encouraged.” Hebrews 6:18
Like the young guys in Kasalle we all should take hold of
hope and be encouraged.
