In college I learned about “horizontal integration”. Basically
defined, horizontal integration represents a strategy for expanding one's
business through blending together existing products with similar, yet new,
items to reach a wider market. The only problem in Albania, strictly
speaking, is there’s no looking across the horizon.
Business life
in Albania seems gridlocked on the same busy thoroughfare as
disappointment. Over here, we lack original ideas, the evidence of creative
capital, and the embrace of internal investment. Memories of past failures
paralyze the entrepreneur from taking risk. Dwelling on the past, it is
always easy to know the outcome. Nothing is ventured, and as such, nothing
is gained. So much for Econ 302.
With all of
that in mind, a flood of good tidings came our way the other day. Lacking
the “normal” means of transportation -- diesel truck (“new school”) -- we
settled for horse delivery (“old school”). The insulation we had ordered was
stranded at the depot with not a truck in sight for delivery. Despair
evident on our faces, Henri saw our need and came to the rescue. In the
midst of 21st century ambitions, the Horse Age had come to life
again.
Now for Econ
303: who needs the horizon when you have a horse? Class dismissed.
