Time and Chance in Life
It is championship soccer season in Europe. The winners from throughout
the continent square off in matches viewed by millions including many
Albanians. It’s their version of the World Series without peanuts or a
national anthem.
A game is played in the village that has almost an equal to the appeal of
championship soccer. We play the village version of championship musical
chairs. The children really like it and even we adults join in for the fun
and cheap thrills. All the winners from the various size divisions get a
change to square off in a “winner take all” version of bragging rights. You
can see in the picture Eldina’s great
form. Today she eventually claimed the bragging rights.
The game is taken seriously. Care is given for the right placement of
chairs, the sizing up of opponents and even a smile or a wink to the guitar
player.
At times in different stations in life, we personally play games of musical
chairs. All of us know the three elements that are necessary: chairs,
music, players. Winning in musical chairs depends on timing and chance.
But winning in life with timing and chance is not a guarantee for success.
At best these things are beyond our control. Since we can’t determine these
elements in life, it’s simply better to keep our lives on the true focus of
Christ and his life. We must not let the imperfections of this world,
chance and timing, distract us from the work of serving Him.
