It was like a good
old-fashioned barn raising. Strong arms attached to strong men, with hands
as hard as flint. Stretching, lifting, pulling, all fall into the recipe of
a good work. We are attaching the steel ribs to our outdoor shelter in
Vlashaj.
Mandi and Arjan
are lifting the steel
works that will help build our unit into a recognizable shelter.
The ironworkers (our
friends) apply the skill of their trade they’ve learned over their years of
touching cold steel. These raw beams, almost blue in the sunlight, snap and
pop as Astrit brings together one, two, then a third piece. The welder’s
arc and pop is almost music, a broken cadence with a light show thrown in!
It is only now beginning
to take shape. It looks like the skeleton of a katydid. But with the roof
and sides, table and chairs soon to appear, all the ingredients will soon be
there. We are looking forward to the service it will bring for the village
children of Vlashaj.
