March 10, 2005 --  Meet Luan

We would like for you to meet Luan (42), Marikaj's shoe cobbler.  He has a great, great attitude about life.  He always remembers your name and carries respect from the entire village, including his four children.
Two years ago Luan spent 8 hours "in" Italy.  He went aboard the ferry in Durres (Albania) to say goodbye to some of his friends.  While he was on board, the ferry left the dock.  He said he had an enjoyable trip across the Adriatic but that he wasn't permitted to deport the vessel in Barri (Italy).  He looked at Italy but never touched its soil.  He made the return trip to Albania free of charge but disheartened, saying he would never do that again.  Instead, Luan chosen mode of transportation is his 30-year-old Mercedes-Benz.

Does your name mean anything?
Yes, it means a lot.  First because my father chose it for me and second, because it sounds like the name of the animal, lion.

What was the most dangerous episode of your life?
The most dangerous event was in 1997 when I saw children playing with guns, shooting around without knowing it.

When are you the happiest?
When I am with my wife and children at home, seeing how my son grows every day.

What is the best job you have had?
I never had any good job to quit.

What makes you feel rich?
Good health and the love of my family.

Give me the name of your favorite pet & why was it your favorite?
I like the dog and the dove.

What is your favorite season of the year?
Spring

What is the best advice your father gave you?
Work hard, be patient, do not treat people poorly.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
My desire is to go to America because I have heard on TV and the news that it is the most democratic country in the world where you can work and win a lot.

Who is the person you most respect in the world?
It is not a person that I respect the most, it is God.

What do you think of Albania?
It will be difficult to improve Albania with the politicians we have here.

What is the name of your favorite television program?
There are a lot of programs.  It depends what you are asking about: art, politics, education, etc.  I like documentaries for the development of economy and politics of the states all over the world.

What would you ask to an American?
What is your opinion of Albanians?  Why do you not allow Albanians to be visitors to America for a  short or long time?
