  • A fifth of the estimated 600,000 weapons that were looted from army warehouses in the crisis of 1997 have been collected.  Refusal to hand in weapons voluntarily is a fineable offense from $80 US dollars to $800 US dollars and punishable by up to 6 months prison sentence

  • Only 17% of all people unemployed receive unemployment benefits.

  • Official statistics put the number of Albanian farmers dealing in tobacco around 40,000.  The tax from domestic cigarettes could raise 400 million in US dollars.

  •  Half the primary school students are not going to school in Tirana.  Many children have failed the first grade for two or three consecutive years.

  •  Of the 200 largest companies in Albania 88% of them are in Tirana.

  • The Albanian archaeological service has noted new excavations at the southern city of Butrint.  A classical theater, various temples and bath houses of the Roman period were found on the acropolis near the ancient city.

  • Albania's National Soccer Club had not won a trophy in foreign competition in 54 years (1946) until winning at Malta in the winter of 2000.

  •  Albania has 34 factories producing bricks and ceramics, claiming an annual production of 350 million standard bricks.
